Mark Warner - Believe it or not

Posted by Cominius in October 12th 2008

Jim Hoeft at Bearing Drift points to a news story at NV Daily.com which quotes U.S. Senate candidate Mark Warner regretting comments made 14 years ago:
“Next weekend, you’re going to see a coalition that has just about completely taken over the Republican Party in this state,” Warner says in the recording.

“And if they have their way, will take over state government, made up of the Christian Coalition, made up of right-to-lifers,” he said. “But it’s not just the right-to-lifers, it’s made up of the NRA … it’s made up of the home-schoolers.”

“It’s made up of a whole coalition of people…

Defending the American Dream Saturday Morning

Posted by Cominius in October 11th 2008

Bloggers filled their den early this morning preparing for the Saturday morning session of Defending the American Dream Summit in Arlington VA. Visitors to the blogger den included Virginia Attorney General Bob McDonnell.

Get all the details below the fold.

First up this morning is Steve Lonegan, State Director, AFP-New Jersey. Steve related the current battle against taxation and government enslavement to the battle fought and won by the patriots at Trenton to overcome British forces who promised a no captives response to the colonial revolution.

Next up is Fred Barnes, Editor of the…

Defending the American Dream Friday Evening

Posted by Cominius in October 11th 2008

Capitalists and fellow travelers were delighted by the unabashedly free market views presented at the evening “Tribute to Ronald Reagan” dinner at the Defending the American Dream Summit. Speakers included George Will, Dinesh D’Souza, Senator James Inhofe (R-OK), Edwin Meese III, and Dr. James C Miller. Miller, and Meese offered personal insights of working for and with the Gipper, reminding the audience of the greatness Ronald Reagan brought to the presidency.

George Will offered what was perhaps the most insightful comment. He reflected on two intersecting trend lines. The first declining…

Defending the American Dream Friday Afternoon

Posted by Cominius in October 10th 2008

Your humble correspondent had the pleasure of working on bloggers row at the Defending the American Dream Summit this afternoon in Arlington Virginia. On this delightful Friday afternoon, the Summit adjourned to the west side of the Capitol to register opposition to the bailout, higher taxes, more government control over the economy and in sum turning the American dream into a government program.

On bloggers row, more than 20 bloggers hunched over their computers knocking out stories of blog glory and cyber daring do. The morning sessions also included a seminar on integrating Web 2.0 and…

Who does Virginia Voter Registration Favor

Posted by Cominius in October 10th 2008

Virginia voter registrations closed on Monday 10/3/08. Today I created a table comparing locality by locality the number of active voter registrations recorded by the Virginia State Board of Elections and the 2007 Populations estimates for adults 18+ available from the University of Virginia’s Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service. The average percentage of registrations compared to adults 18+ for the Commonwealth was was 81.21%. Below the fold I show the localities where the registrations were different from the average by 10% or more. These localities are compared with the party who…

Obama’s Most Liberal Record -Details Part III

Posted by Cominius in October 9th 2008

We continue with our survey of the key votes tabulated by the National Journal which rated Senator Barack Obama as the most liberal Senator. Today we focus on foreign policy related votes relating to the military operations in Iraq. All of the 2007 roll call votes below the fold if successful would have prevented the “surge” and arguably would have in effect been votes for unilateral surrender. Our format is the same, identifying the measure and the roll call vote.

Bill SJRes9/ Vote 75. Supported a bill to begin withdrawing troops from Iraq within 4 months of March 15, 2007.

Bill HR…

McCain and Health Care choice

Posted by Cominius in October 8th 2008

During Tuesday’s presidential debate, Senator McCain advocated allowing Americans to purchase insurance policies across state lines. That is to be able to choose a health care plan that suited them and advise unnecessary mandates. Senator McCain said:
“I want to give every American a $5,000 refundable tax credit. They can take it anywhere, across state lines. Why not? Don’t we go across state lines when we purchase other things in America? Of course it’s OK to go across state lines because in Arizona they may offer a better plan that suits you best than it does here in Tennessee.”

States…

Obama’s Most Liberal Record -Details Part II

Posted by Cominius in October 8th 2008

Continuing with our review of Senator Obama’s Liberal Record:

First just a followup on part I. An ad following the debate featured former Democratic presidential nominee and South Dakota Senator George McGovern and was dedicated specifically to opposing ending the secret ballot for union organizing elections. This position is exactly opposed to the position of Senator Obama.

Here are some key votes included in the most liberal rating on social issues:

Bill S30/Vote 128. Opposed support for non-embryonic stem cell research. In effect only willing to do stem cell research if it involved the…

Obama - Health Care a Right

Posted by Cominius in October 7th 2008

In tonight’s debate, Senator Barack Obama declared that he believed that health care was a right. This statement clearly defines the absolute failure of Senator Obama to comprehend the nature of rights and the Constitution of the United States.

Let us look from the micro to the macro.
If health care is a right, what kind of health care do I have a right to?
Can I compel my dentist to provide me with gold crowns?
Can I compel my plastic surgeon to make me good looking?
Can I compel my dermatologist to provide me with botox?
Can I compel someone to provide me with a transplant I need or…

Obama’s Most Liberal Record- Details

Posted by Cominius in October 7th 2008

During the Mississippi debate, Senator McCain mentioned that the National Journal had rated Senator Obama as the most liberal senator for 2007. Being liberal, or the most liberal may be red meat to conservatives, it may only have a diffused meaning for others. A more detailed look at the actual votes and issues that earned Senator Obama most liberal senator rating, is presented in this series of posts.Of the 36 key votes on economic issues, Senator Obama did not vote on 10.

Here are just some of the key votes on economic issues that earned Senator Obama his most liberal rating:

Second Chance: Bank Bailout Passes

Posted by Cominius in October 3rd 2008

On the revised bailout bill presented by the Senate on a take it or leave it basis to the House of Representatives, the resulting vote favored the bank bailout bill on a vote of 263 to 171. 63 Democrats and 108 Republicans voted no. The Virginia congressional delegation vote was also split with Congressman Bobby Scott (D) and Robb Wittman (R), Thelma Drake (R), Randy Forbes (R), Virgil Goode (R) and Robert Goodblatte (R) voting no. Eric Cantor (R), Frank Wolf (R), Tom Davis (R), Jim Moran (D) and Rick Boucher (D) voted yes. This is unchanged from Monday’s result. The entire roll call is…

Biden: Ideology is litmus test for judges

Posted by Cominius in October 2nd 2008

Senator Joe Biden in a closing answer in the Vice Presidential debate reported that his major change in philosophy after entering the Senate was to recognize that it was not enough that judges were wise, honest and learned, but should be selected based on the ideology. This illustrates a major point of difference in what the judicial system is intended for. To those on the side of Senator Biden, the purpose of judges is to enforce ideology in the decisions coming before the courts. Those who oppose this position believe that the purpose of the system of justice is to enforce the law as the…

Biden at Debate: Global Warming is entirely man made

Posted by Cominius in October 2nd 2008

Just minutes ago during the Vice Presidential Debate Senator Joe Biden declared that global warming is entirely due to man. Such a position of course does not explain how the earth entered an ice age from a previously period of warmer weather, or how mankind ended the ice age. Perhaps it was all those wood burning SUV’s.

Obama courage: Let’s hunker down and survive

Posted by Cominius in October 2nd 2008

During the debate on Friday in Mississippi, Senator Obama responded to the following question from Jim Lehrer:

What do you think the likelihood is that there would be another 9/11-type attack on the continental United States?

As you can see from the complete answer quoted below the fold, Senator Obama did not respond to the question directly, but he did provide some insight into his dangerous philosophy about homeland security and fighting terrorism. In a nutshell, Senator Obama believes we need more effort to harden facilities in the U.S. so that they will survive an attack. We may…

Senate Bailout Vote: The Nays

Posted by Cominius in October 1st 2008

The Senate voted moments ago on a bailout/tax cut extension bill 74 to 25. The measure moves to the House where a vote is expected on Friday. Both of Virginia’s senators voted yes. It is interesting to see who voted no. 15 Republicans, 9 Democrats, 1 independent. Of the Democrats none represent east coast states except Nelson of Florida, the Republicans are more widely distributed. The only states with two no votes were Alabama, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Wyoming, all south or west. It is an interesting list (below the fold) nonetheless.

New Senate Effort on Bailout: Economic nonsense

Posted by Cominius in October 1st 2008

The Wall Street Journal reports Tuesday night that the Senate will vote on a replacement bailout bill on Wednesday evening. The Senate action is an attempt to provide some economic rescue following the failure of the banking system bailout bill in the House on Monday.
Some elements of the renewed rescue attempt may be an increase in the cap on FDIC insured deposits from $100,000 to $250,000, a one year fix for the alternative minimum tax, and possibly a surtax on millionaires to pay for the bailout. Other details are not clear at this time.

Let us consider some of this as far as it is known….

Posted by Cominius in September 29th 2008

The House of Representatives voted down the bank bailout bill today on a close vote 228 to 205. 95 Democrats and 133 Republicans voted no. The Virginia congressional delegation vote was also split with Congressman Bobby Scott (D) and Robb Wittman (R), Thelma Drake (R), Randy Forbes (R), Virgil Goode (R) and Robert Goodblatte (R) voting no. Eric Cantor (R), Frank Wolf (R), Tom Davis (R), Jim Moran (D) and Rick Boucher (D) voted yes. The entire roll call is here.

What is interesting is the vote cast by members of the House Banking Committee (see below the fold). With the difference between…

9/11/01 Remembered

Posted by Cominius in September 11th 2008

The blackened limestone block in the rebuilt wall of the Pentagon with the simple inscription September 11, 2001 is still there. As I was a year ago I was at the Pentagon again this past Sunday. I walked there from Arlington Cemetery with thousands of patriots who gave up their Sunday morning to remember what happened at the Pentagon on 9/11/01 and in the world since, and participate in the America Supports You fourth annual Freedom Walk.

I have participated in each of the four annual Freedom Walks. The stone and its inscription still recalls that at 9:37 a.m., September 11, 2001 , what…
