John McCain’s Faith

Posted by Deo Vindice in September 19th 2008

From The Patriot Post e-newsletter:

THE FOUNDATION

“I Pray Heaven to Bestow The Best of Blessing on THIS HOUSE, and on ALL that shall hereafter Inhabit it. May none but Honest and Wise Men ever rule under This Roof!” —President John Adams (http://PatriotPost.US/fqd/)

PATRIOT PERSPECTIVE

JOHN MCCAIN: VETERAN FAITH

By Mark Alexander

“And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free.” (John 8:32)

“For I have learned the truth: There are greater pursuits than self-seeking. Glory is not a conceit. It is not a decoration for valor. It is not a prize for being the most clever, the strongest, or the boldest. Glory belongs to the act of being constant to something greater than yourself. No
misfortune, no injury, no humiliation can destroy it. This is the faith that my commanders affirmed, that my brothers-in-arms encouraged my allegiance to. It was the faith I had unknowingly embraced at the Naval Academy. It was my father’s and grandfather’s faith. A filthy, crippled, broken man, all I had left of my dignity was the faith of my fathers. It was enough.” —John McCain in Faith of my Fathers, his 1999 book on military tradition, his
family, and his faith.

John McCain is a man of strong faith—a faith tested by torturous hardship few men have faced. It is a faith that wholly informs his character, his integrity, his purpose, his mission, his worldview.

Those who know John McCain well—his family, friends, pastor, political colleagues, and those Patriot veterans who suffered beside him as Prisoners of War—describe many facets of his personality. Their descriptions are of a man who is complicated and diverse, but to a person, they recognize him as a man of deep and abiding faith.

McCain, however, is a man who says little about his spiritual convictions, perhaps in constancy with the counsel of 12th-century Friar Saint Francis of Assisi: “Go forth and preach the Gospel; if necessary use words.”

As was the case with most of our Founders, who did not endeavor to make America a “Christian Nation” (though many of them worked tirelessly to forge a “Nation of Christians”), McCain does not make public declarations of his faith when campaigning for political office.

While he does not use his faith as a political platform, he certainly does not subscribe to the errant “Separation of Church and State” (http://PatriotPost.US/alexander/edition.asp?id=330) doctrine, nor does he hesitate to identify himself as a Christian when asked.

Rick Warren, pastor of California’s Saddleback Church, interviewed Senators McCain and
Obama (http://www.thirty-thousand.org/pages/Saddleback_16AUG2008.htm) in August, asking them what it meant to be a Christian. John McCain required no teleprompter for his answer, stating flatly: “It means I’m saved and forgiven.”

McCain attends North Phoenix Baptist Church (http://www.npbc.org/), a Southern Baptist congregation, though his “quiet faith” is surely more in keeping with his
upbringing in the historic but now troubled Episcopal Church (http://PatriotPost.US/alexander/edition.asp?id=562).

His Baptist pastor, Dan Yeary, says of McCain, “It is a privilege and an honor to be this close to a man I’ve learned to love, who has the potential to be a great president for our country. I certainly am in favor of God’s endorsement on his life.”

Biographer Paul Alexander writes that McCain’s quiet faith is also the result of military tradition: “He’s a very spiritual person but… in his core, he’s a military man. They don’t feel comfortable talking about religion.”

Perhaps not in uniform (http://PatriotPost.US/alexander/edition.asp?id=321), anyway.

In Faith of My Fathers, McCain says his father, a full admiral and son of a full admiral, was also a man of quiet faith, who knelt twice daily for devotions with a prayer book frayed from use.

For his part, McCain wrote that he really came into account with his Creator when he was a POW.

A long-time McCain friend, Col. Bud Day, a Medal of Honor recipient and fighter pilot who, like McCain, was shot down over Vietnam, met McCain when they became roommates at the infamous “Hanoi Hilton.” Col. Day was a senior officer among the POWs and, recognizing McCain’s faith, appointed him a chaplain to their fellow prisoners.

Day says that McCain “remembered the Episcopal liturgy, and sounded like a bona fide preacher.”

Though McCain initially treated the assignment lightly, it was a turning point for him: “I’ll never forget that first Christmas when I… read from the Nativity story… And I looked in that room around and there were guys who had already been there for seven years and tears were streaming down their face, not out of sorrow, but out of joy that for the first time in all
that captivity, we could celebrate the birth of Christ together. It was more sacred to me than any service I had attended in the past, or any service I have attended since.”

Of faith tried and tested, McCain writes, “Our senior officers always stressed to us the three essential keys to resistance, which we were to keep uppermost in our mind, especially in moments when we were isolated or otherwise deprived of their guidance and the counsel of other prisoners. They were faith in God, faith in country, and faith in your fellow prisoners… Without faith,
we would lose our dignity, and live among our enemies as animals lived among their human masters.”

“POWs often regard their prison experience as comparable to the trials of Job. Indeed, for my fellow prisoners who suffered more than I, the comparison is appropriate. Hungry, beaten, hurt, scared, and alone, human beings can begin to feel that they are removed from God’s love, a vast distance separating them from their Creator. The anguish can lead to resentment, to
the awful despair that God has forsaken you. To guard against such despair, in our most dire moments, POWs would make supreme efforts to grasp our faith tightly, to profess it alone, in the dark, and hasten its revival.”

“Once I was thrown into another cell after a long and difficult interrogation. I discovered scratched into one of the cell’s walls the creed ‘I believe in God, the Father Almighty.’ There, standing witness to God’s presence in a remote, concealed place, recalled to my faith by a stronger,
better man, I felt God’s love and care more vividly than I would have felt it had I been safe among a pious congregation in the most magnificent cathedral.”

Anyone who has been through life-changing trauma will understand these words John McCain wrote about prayer: “There were many times I didn’t pray for another day and I didn’t pray for another hour—I prayed for another minute to keep going.”

Of McCain’s courage and fortitude, Col. Day says with certainty, “He wasn’t corruptible then, he’s not corruptible today.”

Capt. Tom Moe, who also got to know the real John McCain while they were imprisoned together, says that one of his strongest recollections of McCain was one day when McCain’s captors were returning him to his cell after torturous interrogations. Moe looked through a pinhole in his door as McCain looked back in the direction of his cell and gave him a smile and thumbs up: “I look
back and that vision of him looking over at me and going ‘we’re going to pull through this’ under terrible, terrible conditions is a great memory for me.”

Another of McCain’s fellow POWs, and one of my personal heroes, Col. Roger Ingvalson (http://PatriotPost.US/alexander/edition.asp?id=505), told me this week, “I spent two years with John McCain in some of the worst circumstances imaginable. I have spent time with John under much better circumstances in the years since. John McCain has the highest integrity of any political
leader I have ever had the privilege of knowing, and I have known plenty.”

In this political season, many political stump speeches end with the words, “God Bless America.” But rest assured, when John McCain uses those words, they are much more than an obligatory footnote.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

“I’m not running for president because I think I’m blessed with such personal greatness that history has anointed me to save our country in its hour of need. My country saved me… and I cannot forget it. And I will fight for her for as long as I draw breath, so help me God. I’m going to fight for my cause every day as your president. I’m going to fight to make sure every American
has every reason to thank God, as I thank Him: that I’m an American, a proud citizen of the greatest country on earth, and with hard work, strong faith and a little courage, great things are always within our reach. Fight with me. Fight for what’s right for our country. Fight for the ideals and character of a free people. Fight for our children’s future. Fight for justice and opportunity for all. Stand up to defend our country from its enemies. Stand up for each other, for beautiful, blessed, bountiful America. Stand up and fight. We’re Americans, and we never give up. We never quit. We never hide from history. We make history. Thank you, and God bless you, and God bless
America.” —John McCain, concluding his nomination acceptance
speech (http://PatriotPost.US/news/rnc2008_mccain.asp)

ON CROSS-EXAMINATION

“I believe he’s a man of deep convictions and authentic Christian faith.” —former Arkansas Gov. (and Southern Baptist pastor) Mike Huckabee, who has spoken with John McCain at length about his faith

What Happened on Wall Street

Posted by Deo Vindice in September 18th 2008

Too many folks got mortgages they could barely afford - or actually were above their means. Republicans and Democrats in government contributed to the problem. The government backed up the bad business decisions with Fannie and Freddie. Republicans and Democrats - more to the Democrats - milked those organizations for millions in contributions and, for some, in high level jobs.

When the 30 years of standing in the way of energy development - and phenomenally stupid legislation like ethanol mandates - came to its logical conclusion on the supply and demand curve. The price of oil rose high and fast.

Families with only a few bucks left at the end of a normal month had to decide between gas to go to work and keep their jobs or pay the mortgage. About 800,000 families lost their homes this year.

The collapse of so many loans in so short a time exceeded the reserves of some financial institutions to cover their losses. Some companies will close and some are being bailed out by Congress. It’s not the end of the world, unless Congress overreacts and really screws things up.

The executives of every failed organization should be treated to the same investigation that Enron and World Com got. If laws were broken, then charges should be filed.

The new regulations from Federal agencies and new laws from the Congress should be developed with prudence and caution. Don’t kill the golden goose that produces capital. Take time in creating fixes that only beget more abuses, failures and problems.

In the meantime, let’s hope the market makes some good recovery in the coming weeks to keep this issue from giving the election to Barack Hussein Obama and the socialists who will make it far worse for Wall Street and us all - even as they grab as much money as they can - like Bill Clinton’s people did.

By the way, what legislation has Barack Hussein Obama introduced in his time in Senate to fix the problems? Oh, nothing. Like the O in Obama. Zero. Oh.

A House Divided Can Be Rebuilt

Posted by Deo Vindice in September 17th 2008

In the next 50 days of this election the voices from the Left will become more shrill. They will grow more hysterical. The rhetoric from the Left will become more hateful and disgusting. They will have expended their stock of talk about going beyond politics of the past, uniting, reaching across the aisle. They will move from the useless futility of empty words to the sharp edges of strident attacks. If the Left sees itself losing again, their nuttiness before the election will be a multiple of their anger and fear after 2000 and 2004.

They’ll be especially rough with Sarah Palin. She is a Maggie Thatcher threat to Liberal Secular Humanism.

The election will be close unless one side implodes. America is a divided Nation. Virginia is a divided Commonwealth. Yet, there is nothing to fear or be angry about. The divisions make clear the choices in voting.

Everyone who angrily calls Sarah Palin a ‘breeder’ because she is the mother of five vote for Barack Hussein Obama-Biden-Mark “I won’t raise your taxes” Warner vs.
Everyone who loves children and big families as a gift from God vote McCain-Palin-Jim Gilmore.

Everyone who feels Sarah Palin should have aborted her Down’s Syndrome fetus vote Barack Hussein Obama-Biden-Mark “vetoed a bill stopping partial birth abortion” Warner vs.
Everyone who believes in the sanctity of life – especially for babies in the womb - vote McCain-Palin-Jim Gilmore.

Everyone who thinks Sarah Palin is unqualified because she just got a passport, never worked in Washington, and didn’t go to an Ivy League college vote Barack Hussein Obama-Biden-Mark “never schooled in Virginia” Warner vs.
Everyone who can’t afford or don’t want to travel overseas, don’t worship an Ivy League degree and don’t look to Washington for all wisdom vote for McCain-Palin-Jim Gilmore.

Everyone who feels Jesus was a ‘community organizer’ vote Barack Hussein Obama-Biden-Mark “anti-people who cling to their religion and guns” Warner vs.
Everyone who believes that Jesus Christ is their Lord and Savior vote for McCain-Palin-Jim Gilmore.

Everyone who feels opposition to Obama is racism vote for Barack Hussein Obama-Biden-Mark “diversity worshipping” Warner vs.
Everyone who opposes socialism, class warfare, big government, and higher taxes vote for McCain-Palin-Jim Gilmore.

Everyone who wanted to cut and run from Iraq and can’t admit the surge is working vote Barack Hussein Obama-Biden-Mark “never served a day in military service” Warner vs.
Everyone who has ever served in the Armed Forces or has their own children doing so- and who knows the aim of American wars is Victory vote for McCain-Palin-Jim Gilmore.

The divisions in our house are for sound reasons. We can build a better America and Virginia with a simple, solid majority. Please help make it happen.

Born Alive Despite an Abortion

Posted by Deo Vindice in September 16th 2008

See the video and understand, again, why Barack Hussein Obama’s support for infanticide - making abortion survivors die and Mark Warner’s support for infanticide - vetoing a bill banning partial birth abortion is so wrong - and so central to their character and judgment.

Praying for the Nation to be in God’s Plan

Interrupted Words

Posted by Deo Vindice in September 9th 2008

On business travel again - Huntsville, Alabama - with lousy connectivity to blog.

One correction to my criticism of McCain’s election math. He looked like he would subtract the base from 50% of the vote and add the Independents he could recruit. Instead, he added the Conservative base with Sarah Palin and is now adding the Independents. It should be more than 50%.

Hooah.

McCain, Webb, Me - and Gilmore

Posted by Deo Vindice in September 6th 2008

I’m not them. But, I think I know some things about what makes them tick that are worth sharing in public.

All four of us are Scot-Irish. We may have other ancestries coursing our veins – as I have English, Highland and Lowland Scot, Welsh and French. But, Scot-Irish as a culture is like a dominant gene. It doesn’t have to be known as such, labeled Scot-Irish, but the ideas come through as clearly as a couple of millenniums of DNA make my grown children’s faces say “Celtic!”

Our Scot-Irish ideas are captured, well, but not exclusively or definitively, in Sen. James Webb’s “Born Fighting.” Life is about family – and extended Clan. Faith. Country. It’s a fierce independence, pride regardless of wealth or poverty, leadership by military – personal courage - merit, loyalty, fearlessness, hard work, love of life – lust almost, devout personal Christianity, and joy in a good fight.

We’ve worked all of our lives.

We love America. We would do anything for the United States of America.

McCain (age 72), Webb (about 62) and me (57) are Academy graduates. That cauldron of our manhood makes some ideas – words – have a special meaning that fellow graduates - and guys from VMI understand. The accomplished pols are Naval Academy guys, and your correspondent is a West Pointer. But, as Webb described in “A Sense of Honor” we get what it means to give our lives to something bigger than self.

Allow me my observations on what I think I see from shared experiences about these fellows and how it connects to Gov. Jim Gilmore.

John McCain. He is 3rd generation Naval Academy graduate and officer. That means “Country First” really is so for him. It gives him a drive and focus. Yet, it means his family has been comfortable for long enough to not know what it is like to really fear losing your job. You may not get promoted in the Navy, but you’ll get paid. And the worst outcomes of illegal alien amnesty will never be visited on your grandchildren because of the accumulation of wealth in the 4th generation. I support John McCain in this election. I have no illusion that there won’t be some big fights with him when he gets elected on policies that sound patriotic, but prove foolish.

Jim Webb. I presume to know and like this guy from my guts based on what I read and hear from his peers. But, when he walked away from Evangelical Christianity he left his Clansmen. When he ricocheted into the Dems, he zigged into policies and ideas that are antithetical to what made him what he is as a man. Great writer and good thinker who won’t reach his potential because of his choices.

Jim Gilmore. A self-made man who took a different path than the Academy furnace, but came out an educated man, polished in Virginia values and an absolute dedication to service to America. As tough as they come. Work horse, not show horse betrayed by the same Republicans, hated by the same media, who would earn the ire of McCain and Palin for tax and spend corruption. A man who completely gets it on what he can do for The People in the U.S. Senate.

Jim Bowden. A 3 week failed politician not in the category of accomplishments of the fellows above. But, I get them. Took a different path in life. And one note of personal interest.

After my Dad, an Army Officer, had his first heart attack – working himself to death in the Pentagon. I determined that my life wasn’t about me. I figured that I would live a life of vertical hierarchies of priority duties. I was 16. I’ve done so since. Ask my classmates, my fellow soldiers, my family, my clan kin, my friends.

My highest priority is the one, only, true, living God. The United States of America is second. Family is third.

In the First District Convention in May, I had 5 minutes to talk as a candidate for State Central Committee. I knew I was unopposed, so I spoke the whole time for Jeff Frederick and Jim Gilmore. Politics isn’t about me. It’s about winning ideas. In service to others.

Which is why this November it is so vital for Virginians to vote McCain-Palin-Gilmore.

McCain’s Call

Posted by Deo Vindice in September 4th 2008

Senator John McCain called for Americans to fight with him for what is right and best. He used the words that Senator Jim Webb wrote about in his novel about the Naval Academy - serving something bigger than yourself. I understand.

McCain also described a Pax Americana, without using those words, for what is our Nation’s role in the world at this time - to build and maintain “Stability and Security”. He said it in a way that’s easier on the ear.

If he pursues the Conservative principles he proclaimed as President, he will do well. Better than some of the bad legislation he has supported in the past.

The contrast couldn’t be clearer for President and Vice-President. And in Virginia - for the Senate.

Vote McCain-Palin-Gilmore.

Just Words

Posted by Deo Vindice in September 3rd 2008

Ah, the “Just Words” speech of Obama and other assorted Democrats comes to mind, as I hear the words of Rudy Guiliani and Sarah Palin. The ‘just’ words I hear tonight are indeed very just words - as in justice and just right words.

Let their words be the wind to the wildfire this election. Let the majority of America stand up and be counted at the polls as the elitist wanna be rulers, go sputtering, carping, condescending to defeat for another 4 years. Sarah Palin is as Ronald Reagan was.

McCain-Palin-Gilmore for the best, right, just future.

I’m a Sarah Palin Voter

Posted by Deo Vindice in September 2nd 2008

I’m voting for Sarah Palin. I was going to organize a Virginia chapter of “Get Drunk and Vote for McCain” - which was going to be a bit awkward for an Evangelical Christian and Sunday School teacher. I don’t have to do that now.

I can vote for Sarah Palin. And encourage others to do so with confidence and enthusiasm. Sorta like voting for Jim Gilmore for Senator. Just enthusiasm, confidence, hope and determination for two branches of the national government.

Sarah Palin is a real deal Conservative. A Christian woman, wife, mother, and sister. Tough and focused.

I don’t know what she has read, but I hold hope for her like the self-taught Lincoln, Truman, and Reagan. Like our Margaret Thatcher.

Interestingly enough, like the candidate for President I write about in my book, Rosetta 6.2, for 2012.

Let the MSM/Democrats/Liberal Human Secularists trash Sarah Palin and her family all they like. She will represent America well. Americans will see who they are - as they see who she is - and the majority will choose wisely - and Conservatively.

Sarah Palin

Posted by Deo Vindice in September 1st 2008

I’m sure I’ll return to write about Sarah Palin over the coming years. But, let me modify my habit to not write on Sunday.

Sarah Palin could be our Maggie Thatcher. Or not.

But, she is about to face the vicious, sinful, slings and arrows of outrageous and contemptible hatred coming from the Left. From elitist, left = socialist, women. From the MSM.

I pray a hedge and thorns around her and her family. Dear Father God, great friend and brother Jesus, mysterious and wonderful Holy Ghost, I beg you to protect this family. One and all. Completely. Totally. Exalt them. Make them safe and sound. Give them peace. Give them joy. Give them courage. Let Sarah speak the Truth boldly. In Your Perfect Will. Thank You so much.

The Palins’ 17 year old daughter is pregnant. Well, she isn’t punished with a baby - as Barack Hussein Obama said. She is being blessed. And may God bless her, her baby, family - and the young man who will wed her for life - and more children.

It would have been better for all if they had waited until they were married. But, it is what it is. And life is sacred - and wonderful.

Happy Days Are Here Again

Posted by Deo Vindice in August 23rd 2008

If John McCain picks a Conservative for his Vice President, then happy days are here again. That great Democrat theme song will resound for us all. Obama/Biden is more than arrogance + pride + arrogance + pride. It is multiplied by cynical inside Washington x (corrupt Chicago pol) x (clueless on the world) Marxist.

The world hasn’t seen such a display of arrogance mixed with ignorance and just plain being wrong since the last time Hollywood rolled out a red carpet.

Jim Gilmore - A Man of His Word

Posted by Deo Vindice in August 21st 2008

Attended a Gilmore fund-raiser in Gloucester County. Catesby and Polly Jones’ place on the York River. Gorgeous evening and great company. Enjoyed being with my political buddies - who have worked together and against each other depending on the candidate and issue, but come back together on the same team - of the past decade and a half - and a number of new friendly folks.

Jim Gilmore was Jim Gilmore. Reaganesque and Trumanesque in the ways I’ve written for the past couple of years he truly is. But, always what you see is what you get - Governor Jim Gilmore.

Quite a contrast with Mark Warner. Mark Warner the partisan with over the top rhetoric in 94, the candidate who said he wouldn’t raise taxes 6 times in one debate in 01, the governor who raised the largest tax increase in Virginia’s history - as revenues were rising - and vetoed a bill to stop the infanticide of partial birth abortion, and now the Democrat’s key note speaker and - the candidate who won’t admit he supports the end of secret elections for unionization, supports the end of the tax cuts (that means a tax hike), and is absolutely clueless on foreign affairs and military issues.

Jim Gilmore will work to expand solar, geothermal, wind, tidal, you name it energy - while expanding the supply of oil by drilling here and now. Warner won’t drill in Alaska or off the coast of Virginia -ever. And Gilmore will capitalize on clean coal - bringing jobs and wealth to Virginia.

Jim Gilmore learned Russian and studied the Russians as a counter-intelligence soldier in the U.S. Army. Gilmore headed the national Homeland Security study years before 9-11. Warner learned how to use insider political knowledge as a staffer to make millions from government regulated companies.

Jim Gilmore cut the car tax. Warner promised to finish the car tax - and never took off a single penny.

Jim Gilmore is a man of his word. A man Virginians can trust. A Conservative Champion.

Please go to www.jimgilmoreforsenate.com and send him $20. You’ll get it back in lower energy costs and lower taxes many times over. Do it now.

Jim Gilmore is a man of his word. A public servant. A national security expert

Barack Hussein Obama and Mark Warner on Infanticide

Posted by Deo Vindice in August 20th 2008

Go to You-tube and see this video on the Barack Hussein Obama’s support of infanticide in Illinois.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIdbYjmbFzo

Then, recall that Mark Warner, vetoed the ban on partial birth abortion when he was Governor. One of the pro-abortion business lobbies had protested that “only 7 or 8 babies (they call them fetuses) a year were aborted by partial-birth abortion in Virginia a year.” Only 7 or 8 cases of barbaric infanticide a year could have been prevented by signing his name - as his legal duty and moral obligation to do so - but Mark Warner refused.

We recall Barack Hussein Obama’s 20 year mentor, Reverend Jeremiah Wright, liked to preach on the “chickens have come home to roost.” Indeed. And birds of a feather flock together.

Obama and Warner on infanticide. Wrong on life. Wrong for Virginia and America.

McCain/Gilmore for Life vs Obama/Warner for Partial Birth Abortion

Posted by Deo Vindice in August 19th 2008

John McCain made his position clear the other night that life “begins at conception.” Jim Gilmore will champion strict constructionist Constitutional and pro-life judges that McCain nominates.

Barack Hussein Obama didn’t vote against partial birth abortion when he could in Illinois. He spoke up for it as a Constitutional necessity because some judge said so. Apparently, any judge is above Obama’s pay grade.

Mark “I will not raise your taxes” Warner vetoed a bill stopping partial birth abortion in Virginia. The General Assembly over rode his veto.

The Democrat candidates’ support for partial birth abortion, infanticide, says much about their character, judgment and faith.

It should make it crystal clear for all pro-life issue voters where their loyalty and votes should go.

John McCain for President. Jim Gilmore for Senator, Virginia.

McCain Did Even Better Than I Thought

Posted by Deo Vindice in August 18th 2008

When the Democrats accuse you of cheating - on your own opinions, then you know you are doing very well.

How unfair of McCain for having core values, knowing them, and being able to express them decisively. Maybe the Liberals need a fairness doctrine that requires, not only equal time, but for Conservatives to repeat what the Liberals say. But, then they would say Conservatives were saying the same things better, or some other nonsense.

Tough when you can’t compete in the market place of ideas. Like bringing a pen knife to a gun fight.

Makes you wonder how McCain could have actually cheated on expressing his own answers to the same questions Barack Hussein Obama danced around like the Midsummer fairy. How would you cheat on your own words - a public record for 25 years?

McCain did way better than I thought. And, I thought he did wonderfully.

Now - PICK A CONSERVATIVE VICE PRESIDENT, JOHN.
