Don’t fear Bankruptcy

Posted by JohnnyB in November 12th 2008

Bill Ackman is having a great conversation with Charlie Rose.
“Investment banks never had 30-40 times leveraged.”
This guy is making a ton of sense. The problem of easy money, free money without collateral for companies.

Uh-oh

Posted by JohnnyB in November 12th 2008

I expect we’ll be seeing quite a few more stories like this one in the next few years.
I love what the St. Tammany Parish sheriff says here:
“The IQ level of this group is not impressive, to be kind,”
I would caution the media from getting too sensitized about this. For crazy fringe groups, [...]

Bailout Edutainment

Posted by JohnnyB in November 11th 2008

Rather crude and not for kids.
Speaking of conflicts of interest, it should be noted that Paulson’s three immediate predecessors as CEO of Goldman Sachs — Jon Corzine, Stephen Friedman, and Robert Rubin — each left the company to become a U.S. Senator, chairman of the National Economic Council, and Treasury Secretary in the Clinton [...]

McCain’s autopsy

Posted by JohnnyB in November 11th 2008

A reader writes:
Did you hear this? It was on NPR the morning after the election. I’ve listened to it a few times, and out of all the commentary I’ve heard and read so far on the election, this is the one piece that keeps coming back to me.
If Weaver is trying to make [...]

Urban renewal and the abuse of eminent domain

Posted by JohnnyB in November 11th 2008

If you keep voting in the same crowd, your vote gets taken for granted.
The city’s black population was growing rapidly when redevelopment began in the 1950s. By the mid-1970s, however, blocks sat vacant and the black population had started its decades-long slide from about 13 percent to half that in 2005 — the biggest [...]

Huckabee and Dreyfuss on citizenship

Posted by JohnnyB in November 11th 2008

I’ve warmed up to Mike Huckabee.  Dreyfuss is a liberal and yet he’s 100% right in this clip.  It should be noted that the irrational behavior Dreyfuss fears does not only apply to war, this bailout is a perfect example of a decision made without the benefit of time.

Krugman’s solution to current economic crisis: WWIII

Posted by JohnnyB in November 11th 2008

I wish I was making it up.  Really, it sounds like a parody, doesn’t it?
The whoppers get pretty big, but I’ll try to dilute it with some reason.
Here’s the Thesis: The New Deal wasn’t big enough.
And the reason for F.D.R.’s limited short-run success, which almost undid his whole program, was the fact that his economic [...]

Well done samurai.

Posted by JohnnyB in November 10th 2008

Howard Dean comes from the Shaolin side of the tracks, and I’m more of a Wu-Tang Killah B, but I gotta give some respect to the guy.  He had used some fancy swordplay to inflict heavy damage on the Clinton candidacy and wrestle away the democratic party from the DLC.  I don’t admire the Shaolin [...]

Give to Wikipedia

Posted by JohnnyB in November 10th 2008

If you are like me and you use wikipedia every day, throw a little money in the kitty. If you don’t, our entire economy will collapse and they will need a $700 billion bailout down the road anyway.

Chairman Ma Ying-jeou’s iron fist comes down

Posted by JohnnyB in November 9th 2008

Elections have consequences, and elections of change do not always result in change for the better. Case in point, Taiwan. Seven months ago Taiwan voted for change from the independence minded Green Party as the 2nd term of President Chen Shui Ben came to a close. The blue party has been in [...]

Change I can believe in.

Posted by JohnnyB in November 8th 2008

A ringing endorsement for Obama, from Impolite Society.
Here’s how it works: People like you are the tax payers who pay my pension (thank you) and pay for all that government bullshit too. Under the Obama plan everyone will get a $1200 ‘tax rebate’ check from Uncle Sam if they pay taxes like you people and [...]

FDR worship continues at the NY Times

Posted by JohnnyB in November 8th 2008

This journalist wants another FDR, and believes America wants the same.  He was let down with President elect Obama’s press conference yesterday, because apparently Obama wasn’t redistributionist enough yet.
I couldn’t help feeling just a little let down that he didn’t have anything more specific to offer, or anything more inspirational. Throughout the news conference, Mr. [...]

The ascension of Henry Waxman troubling, but not surprising

Posted by JohnnyB in November 8th 2008

Barack Obama was given a mandate for competant, intelligent government.  It was a mandate for bringing the troops home.  Was it a mandate for declaring holy war on corporate America?  John Dingell, who is more of a go-along to get along, middle of the road Democrat, is one of the first of many victims of [...]

Obama’s teleprompter is chafing

Posted by JohnnyB in November 8th 2008

Barack Obama, who ran an amazingly disciplined campaign, gets a little too comfy with the press today.  If his teleprompter would have been there it would have reminded him not to make any comments aimed at presidential widows.
Reminds me of Scott Hall, who was once the main draw at WCW wrestling and was given the [...]

Robert F Kennedy, Jr. as Obama’s EPA chief?

Posted by JohnnyB in November 6th 2008

At first I was worried about this. Now I’m thinking, bring it on. Please bring this conflict about, rattle the saber at American companies and “bring them to their knees”. Robert F Kennedy is like Mike Papantonio with drug problems (hat tip Slate).  He is an alarmist and his appointment would be [...]

Bloomberg reads Logipundit

Posted by JohnnyB in November 6th 2008

I picked the winners and losers, bloomberg does the same, with a few minor differences.  They think United Health Care and other large health insurers will be winners.  Ok, so we have two or three remaining health insurers taking on mandatory bad policies…sound like a winner?
I liked this part:
President Bush increased highway and transit spending [...]
