Kirwin makes it on CNN regarding McCain in NoVA…they still don’t link to Bearing Drift

Posted by J.R. in September 11th 2008

Congrats to BK on his most recent CNN sighting. He even had something intelligent to say about McCain’s potential in NoVA:
Brian Kirwin, a conservative blogger from Virginia Beach, said neither candidate can expect to win the state by campaigni…

Even Democrats are calling Obama the “Messiah”, but in a new twist, Palin is Pontius Pilate

Posted by J.R. in September 11th 2008

Folks, you can’t make this stuff up. From Rep. Steve Cohen (D-TN) yesterday on the House floor:
Mr. COHEN. Mr. Speaker, it’s a bit confusing sometimes to listen to the rhetoric. The Republicans have had the Presidency now for nearly 8 years, and they have had the majority in this House since 1994, I think. [...]

Latest Rasmussen poll in Virginia has McCain up 2 points

Posted by J.R. in September 11th 2008

Rasmussen released Monday that Sen. John McCain now has a two-point lead in the polls over Sen. Barack Obama in Virginia. However, the polling company does not see the four-point swing from last month as significant:
That’s little changed from a month ago. The candidates have not been separated by more than three percentage points [...]

At some point, we have to thank President Bush

Posted by J.R. in September 11th 2008

For all the rhetoric and verbal hand grenades that have been lobbed at President Bush over his “bungled” management of the war on terror, our nation is going to have to recognize that it’s been Bush’s policies over seven years t…

Virginia Beach’s Lanteigne continues to mystify

Posted by J.R. in September 10th 2008

Sheriff Paul Lanteigne is the most confusing (or perhaps confused) man in Virginia politics.

First, the former aid to Democrat Frank Drew, was rumored to be a challenger to Rep. Thelma Drake in a Republican primary. Then, it was a possibility that he might switch parties and challenge as a Democrat.
He decided (smartly) not to [...]

Bearing Drift supports “change”

Posted by J.R. in September 10th 2008

Today I’m fiddling with the template. That shouldn’t affect any of our contributors from posting today or you from commenting at all…but you might see some interesting things happening now and again.
By tomorrow (hopefully earlier) I’ll have the new look rolled out.
Thanks for your patience.

Democrats want to cancel all political events at high schools, right?

Posted by J.R. in September 10th 2008

Because of the popularity of today’s McCain/Palin event in Fairfax, the McCain campaign realized two days ago that they had to change venues. The campaign started to explore what options they might have to ensure that the location they settled on would be large enough to accommodate the 20k+ tickets they gave out.
However, not [...]

Terrie Suit resigns from General Assembly

Terrie Suit, a longtime friend, confided in me yesterday that she is, indeed, resigning from the General Assembly. In a letter to constituents which will be sent later today, Suit stated that :
This past year Tom retired from 27 years of military service which began in the US Marine Corps and culminated with his [...]

Obama supports charter schools and “performance” pay for teachers

Posted by J.R. in September 9th 2008

Excerpts from Sen. Barack Obama’s speech on education today:
Giving our parents real choices about where to send their kids to school also means showing the same kind of leadership at the national level that I did in Illinois when I passed a law to double the number of charter schools in Chicago. That is [...]

McCain and Palin talk Freddie and Fannie to the WSJ

Posted by J.R. in September 9th 2008

In today’s Wall Street Journal, Sen. John McCain and Gov. Sarah Palin make their case regarding government bailouts and the latest issue surrounding Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Perhaps their position can be best summed up as reform over subsidy.
One of us, John McCain, said over two years ago, “If Congress does not act, [...]

Women not sold on Palin

Posted by J.R. in September 8th 2008

In what might be the most interesting aspect of this entire election season: Sen. John McCain’s pick of Gov. Sarah Palin has actually widened the gender gap — where more men prefer the Republicans and more women prefer the Democrats.
According to “The Hotline” - National Journal’s Daily Political Briefing:
– McCain’s surge is being driven largely [...]

NoVA Democrats cry for change, but practice politics as usual

Posted by J.R. in September 8th 2008

In reading an interesting article in the WaPO on the Rep. Frank Wolf v. Judy Feder race in the 10th, one definitely got the sense that the Post was playing-up Feder as the “change” candidate.
That, of course, is not difficult to do when the incumbent has been around for 28 years.
However, what sort of “change” [...]

“Original Mavericks”

Posted by J.R. in September 8th 2008

The McCain campaign released this ad:

Also of note, the Washington Post writes a rather glowing (for them) editorial about how Palin did what former Alaska Gov. Frank Murkowski and Sen. Ted Stevens could not: deliver on building a natural gas pipeline.
Ms. Palin’s predecessor as governor, Republican Frank H. Murkowski, attempted to negotiate a deal with [...]

McCain’s strategy paying poll dividends

Posted by J.R. in September 8th 2008

The Obama campaign expected a huge bump in the polls following his “rock star” appearance in Denver less than two weeks ago - that expectation landed in a thud after the announcement of Gov. Sarah Palin the day after his speech and last week’s GOP convention.
According to the most recent USA Today/Gallup Poll the only [...]

Former Virginia Secretary of Finance Jody Wagner announced on Friday that 30 legislators from the General Assembly have endorsed her candidacy for Lt. Governor, including Senate Majority Leader Richard Saslaw.
That particular endorsement is noteworthy in that the LG’s most visible role is presiding over the senate.
Of the endorsements, several local Senators and Delegates were included:

Senator [...]
