What will this year’s October Surprise be?

Posted by snolan in October 11th 2008

So we are nearly half-way through the last month before the General Election. I have been pondering what this year’s “October Surprise” might be, and I stumbled over this excellent article by by Rany Jazayerli:
Will Bin Laden Strike Again?
I have also been perplexed that McCain’s campaign has been throwing everything they’ve got at Obama [...]

Finally, Notes sync between iPhone and Computer

Posted by snolan in October 9th 2008

So I am fiddling around with a bit of commercial software in demo form and it looks like it will do exactly what I need the iPhone to do to mostly replace my Palm Tungsten C (finally).
As a phone the iPhone is simply awesome. Best sound quality of any mobile phone I have ever [...]

Good Day at Work

Posted by snolan in October 8th 2008

Got to help an old friend get set up at work today, as he is starting as a contractor.
Also got to use the rpcinfo, fuser, umount, killall, and mount commands again for the first time in nearly a decade… I love me some UNIX-foo, but NFS still sucks (though it fills the void).
Built more [...]

Negative Campaigns: Are they all the same?

Posted by snolan in October 8th 2008

The Obama campaign is running a negative campaign message on the internet. It is not the first, nor (likely) the last. Yet I see a very specific difference between the Obama campaign’s official messages and those of his opponents John McCain and Sarah Palin. His are factual and pertinent to the debate [...]

New Yorker Endorses Obama

Posted by snolan in October 7th 2008

The New Yorker has endorsed, and it is worth the read.
New Yorker Endorses Obama
They explain, in good detail why this election is so important, and why Obama is the man for the job.

Weekend Fun

Posted by snolan in October 6th 2008

Had a great, if exhausting, weekend with La Belle Compagnie in Charlottesville. Went to Shebeen Pub both Saturday and Sunday for wonderful South African food and pub food. Interesting mix of cuisines. The American History Weekend event was fun, lots of very interested visitors, and weather that got a bit too warm [...]

Obama Campaign has an iPhone application!?

Posted by snolan in October 2nd 2008

Wow - Obama has an iPhone application:
http://my.barackobama.com/page/content/iphon
Interesting use of technology. I wonder if those same features can be made available to volunteers who do not have an iPhone (which I suspect is most of them).

Life is a State of Mind 2008-10-01 20:05:34

Posted by snolan in October 1st 2008

It is very important that we replace the current congress with some fresh ideas, new attitudes, and a willingness to work with President Obama in the new government in order to get the change we need for our country and our world. That means targeting elected congress-critters who have been voting with the Bush [...]

Freestyles Photos

Posted by snolan in October 1st 2008

I danced this past weekend at Arthur Murray Fall Freestyles and took a few photos with my partner’s excellent Canon Rebel XTi. Pictures are up at my MobileMe Gallery. I have not had time to edit them much or write about the weekend, but it was fun.

Odd iTunes 8 bug?

Posted by snolan in October 1st 2008

I am not even sure this is a bug, but it is a strange and annoying behavior. When I upgraded from iTunes 7 to iTunes 8 for Mac, most of my Smart Playlists stopped playing more than one song with each play command. The playlist would only play one song and stop. [...]

The is_human() filter

Just a reminder folks, if you are going to comment here, you must answer the multiple choice question displayed as a required field in the comment page.
I am seeing some comments get rejected that look legitimate, because the question was left unanswered.

DON’T PANIC

Posted by snolan in September 30th 2008

It’s highly entertaining to watch the childish melodrama exhibited by many of our elected congressional “leaders” and their equally childish counterparts in the financial markets. These people (the news pundits, the politicians, and the investors) should all grow some intestinal fortitude, slow down, take a breath, and think through the financial crisis and so-called [...]

Blind Spots and the Perception of Reality

Posted by snolan in September 29th 2008

Wow, a co-worker forwarded this link about the Blind Spot each of our eyes has and it got me to thinking a little.
If Chris Davis (the author of that link) is correct, and this means that our brains are not seeing what is reality, but only our own perception of reality, partially fabricated to fill [...]

Faster Web Browsing over Wireless

Posted by snolan in September 25th 2008

Almost two months ago I wrote and started investigating why web browsing on my MacBook Air was sluggish. Well, I tried a few things, and then had to focus on other issues and put that problem aside for a bit.
I am happy to say my friend Anthony asked about the same issue and I [...]

Obama, a closer examination; part 2

Posted by snolan in September 25th 2008

A couple of weeks ago I wrote a post examining why Barack Obama is the obvious choice for president based on who his likely Supreme Court Justice nominations will be. It is time we looked at another very important issue that the person filling the office of president will face; foreign policy.
A great deal [...]

Whacky Fun!

Posted by snolan in September 24th 2008

Just for your entertainment, I have a whacky fun new conspiracy theory…. this election’s October surprise from the Rovian arm of the Republican Party will be…

Senator John McCain steps aside and claims it is for a sudden change in his health and asks Mitt Romney to step into his place on a Romney/Palin ticket… [...]

Spam phone calls at work from 800-969-8542

Posted by snolan in September 24th 2008

So I’ve been getting bogus calls at work from 800-969-8542. I also get calls at work for a former employee who had the same extension, and politely explain the former worker has not worked here in years. These are not the calls from several different numbers all looking for the former employee.
These calls [...]

La Belle Public Shows in October

Posted by snolan in September 24th 2008

La Belle Compagnie is participating in two public shows this October. La Belle is a living history group focused on English history during the Hundred Year’s War, and right now we are focused on 1388.

The first is from 9am to 5pm on October 4th and 5th in Charlottesville, Virginia; it is called the American [...]

Prince William County Insanity Continues

Posted by snolan in September 23rd 2008

Sick of presidential election news and national politics? Guess what I get to come home to in my own local county… bigotry, racism, and fear…. no just by some of the residents; but by people officially selected for public service positions by our “enlightened” county Board of Supervisors.
Huge thank you to Eric [...]
